White German Shepherds in Kenya: The Rare Colour, Explained
The all-white German Shepherd is one of the breed's rarest and most striking looks. Here's what it actually is, whether it's purebred, how it differs from the White Swiss Shepherd, and what to know before buying one in Kenya.

The white German Shepherd is a striking, all-white version of the breed. It is a purebred German Shepherd — the white colour is caused by a recessive gene that masks the normal coat colour, and it does not affect temperament, intelligence or trainability. Importantly, a white Shepherd is not albino: it has normal dark eyes, nose and skin pigment. In Kenya the colour is rare, which makes a genuine, health-tested white German Shepherd both hard to find and highly sought after.
Interest in white Shepherds is growing among Kenyan buyers drawn to that clean, wolf-like white coat. But rarity attracts both premiums and misinformation, so it's worth understanding exactly what you're looking at before you buy. This guide covers whether they're purebred, how they differ from the White Swiss Shepherd, and how to buy one safely.
Is a white German Shepherd purebred?
Yes. A white German Shepherd is a purebred German Shepherd whose coat colour is produced by a recessive gene — both parents must carry it for a white puppy to appear, which is why the colour is uncommon. The one caveat is showing: under the German (FCI) breed standard, white is a disqualifying colour in the conformation show ring, so a white Shepherd generally can't be shown as a standard GSD. That is a show-ring rule about colour, not a statement that the dog is any less purebred, healthy or capable.
White German Shepherd vs White Swiss Shepherd
These two are related but not the same, and the terms get mixed up. A white German Shepherd is a German Shepherd that happens to be white. The White Swiss Shepherd (Berger Blanc Suisse) is a separate, FCI-recognised breed that descended from white German Shepherds and was developed into its own distinct line. If a seller uses the names interchangeably, ask exactly what the dog is and to see the pedigree.
Do white German Shepherds have different temperament or health?
No. Coat colour has nothing to do with temperament or trainability — a white Shepherd is the same loyal, intelligent, protective dog as any other German Shepherd. Because they are not albino, they don't carry the health issues linked to true albinism. They do share the same breed health considerations as any Shepherd, the most important being the hips — so, exactly as with any colour, what matters is buying from health-tested parents, not the shade of the coat. See our guide to hip dysplasia in German Shepherds.
Buying a white German Shepherd safely in Kenya
Buy a white Shepherd the same careful way you'd buy any: insist on seeing both parents, ask for the pedigree and health testing in writing, and choose a registered breeder you can visit. Be especially wary of a steep “rare colour” markup with no health testing or papers behind it — rarity is not a substitute for soundness. Our guides on choosing an ethical breeder and avoiding puppy scams in Kenya apply doubly to rare colours, and our price guide explains what actually drives a fair price.
As with the solid black and sable Shepherds, colour should be the bonus, not the reason. A good white German Shepherd is a good German Shepherd first — sound hips, a stable temperament and a real pedigree matter far more than the coat.
